~~NOTOC~~ = BRaCeLeT talk series, #5 == Irina Burukina (Eötvös Loránd University) === Personal pronouns instead of reflexives and intensifiers: a puzzle from Kabardian Kabardian is a North-West Caucasian language that due to its polysynthetic nature uses lexical pronouns quite rarely. In this talk, I will argue that Kabardian lacks dedicated lexical reflexives and intensifiers and uses personal pronouns instead. I will provide the data, collected during my field work, that proves that personal pronouns are allowed to function as reflexives (violating condition B) in contexts where a reflexive verbal prefix cannot appear. I will also show that personal pronouns can be interpreted as intensifiers, however in this case I will propose a hypothesis about the appositive nature of such constructions. ; time : 6 December 2016, Tuesday 2:15pm ; place : 1088 Budapest, Rákóczi út 5, R327
