[Provisions relating to plagiarism]

68/A.⁶ plagiarism: the use of another author’s work defined under Section 74/A (2) in breach of the provisions set out in Section 74/B (1);

LEGAL COMPLIANCE OF WORK PREPARED BY STUDENTS

Section 74/A⁶⁰

(1) Students may use another author’s work in their own work, including, without limitation, in the course of preparing a home paper, in-class paper and thesis (hereinafter referred to as the “student’s work”), only in compliance with copyright and in accordance with the provisions specified in Section 74/B (1). A written or oral examination, laboratory record and in-class examination shall not be considered as a student’s work.

(2) For the purposes of Sections 74/A-74/C, any literary, scientific, artistic or other intellectual product not made by the student shall be considered as another author’s work, irrespective of

a) the person who has made it (e.g. whether it is a known author or another student),

b) the form in which it appears (e.g. whether it is a printed or Internet-based [URL] source or a conference presentation, and whether it is in Hungarian or in another language),

c) the extent to which it has become public (widely known work or work with limited access),

d) whether or not such other author’s work is under copyright protection or similar protection under the relevant laws.

Section 74/B⁶¹

(1) When using another author’s work, the following provisions shall be observed:

a) in the event that another author’s work is wholly or partially used (e.g. borrowed, quoted, translated from another language or summarized), the source and the name of the author – where such name appears in the source or, in the case of orally performed works, where such name can be unambiguously ascertained – shall be indicated;

b) another author’s work or any part thereof may be used by reproducing the original, to the extend justified by the nature and purpose of the student’s work, only if marked as a quote.

(2) The tutor shall have the right to check compliance with the obligations specified in this Section by, inter alia, applying anti-plagiarism software programmes.

(3) The use and the indication of the use of another author’s work shall be otherwise governed by the relevant rules of the field of research concerned.

Section 74/C⁶²

(1) In the event that a student fails to comply with the rules relating to use [Section 74/B (1)] in full or in part, the student’s work shall be qualified as non-appraisable and the rating of the given course/thesis with a mark shall be denied.

(2) It shall be considered as a disciplinary offence if a student – in breach of the rules relating to use [Section 74/B (1)] – submits or presents as his or her own work, wholly or for the most part, literally or in terms of substantial content, another author’s work or the compiled version of other authors’ works.

(3) The consequences specified in paragraphs (1)-(2) shall not be enforced if the student has, on the whole, complied with the rules relating to use [Section 74/B (1)] and it may be ascertained that the breach of such rules is attributable to negligence.

Section 76

(3) Students shall write a separate thesis in each degree course.

(6)⁶⁴ A thesis shall be the student’s own work in which the provisions set out in Sections 74/A-74/C shall be observed. A statement with the original signature of the student shall be attached to the thesis, certifying that the student’s own intellectual product is in compliance with the provisions set out in Sections 74/A-74/C and paragraph (3).
