Dear All,

we have to face bad news again: our colleague and friend Peter Meikle passed away this morning. He was 67, and suffered from liver cancer. He taught academic and communications skills, content-based language development, creative writing, and media English at our Department of English Applied Linguistics where he was a popular teacher and a likeable colleague. He came to Hungary from his native England where he received a BA (Hons) in English Literature at the University of East Anglia and a BA (Hons) in Philosophy and Religion at King's College. Through a varied and colourful career he published several, mostly dark, novels (Return to Darkness, Gate to Fear, The Innocents, Nightmare Park, The Nursery of Fate, The Crooked Moon) and sold screenplays such as Obsessions. He left Britain in his long quest for a more liveable world which led him to Hungary of all places. Some of the courses he taught revealed the measure of his success: he found “The construction of ‘Eastern Europeanness’ by the media” something to think and talk about. He will be fondly missed by his two young sons and his many students and colleagues from the last two decades of his life that he spent in Hungary where he hoped to be happier than in England.
