This course will introduce students to a variety of topics relevant in the field of Applied Linguistics. Readings will be assigned which highlight these topics, and classroom discussions and tasks will be used to facilitate deeper understanding of the material. Topics will include pragmatics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, individual differences in language learners, discourse analysis, and language testing, among others.

Requirements:

1. Regular attendance (students are not allowed to miss more than 3 classes)
2. Active participation with class discussions and engagement with the material
3. Completion of assignments and tasks

Assessment: The final grade will be based on the following main components; more in-depth information regarding the assessment will be provided in the form of rubrics and guidelines which will be shared with the students during the semester:

1. Weekly course work (25%): Students are expected to attend class and take part in in-class activities. If you miss class, you must email the instructor in order to be given a make-up task for that day. Failure to do so will result in a loss of participation points.
2. Presentations (25%; must be completed to pass the course): Each student must deliver a presentation (8-10 mins) which summarizes a piece of empirical research related to the student’s chosen topic.
3. Literature review (12.5%; must be completed to pass the course): Students must write a 5-7 paragraph literature review which answers a research question through the help of applied linguistics research articles. Students will have the opportunity to turn in a rough draft (though it is not mandatory).
4. Oral exam (37.5%, must be completed to pass the course): On the second-to-last day of class, each student will have to take part in an oral exam, which will consist of two parts. The first part is a summary and discussion of the literature review that the student wrote; for the second part, students will draw from a list of topics that have been discussed throughout the semester, and they will need to answer questions and discuss different aspects related to the given topic.
