English vs American track for BA major students

At the end of the first term of your BA major in English and American studies, you have to make a choice between the English and the American track. If you do not make a choice, you will continue in the English track. Accordingly, if you select the English track, you do not have to take any action. If you select the American track, you have to register your request. Depending on the number of applicants to the American Track, a round of interviews may be held in January.

The curriculum of the two tracks are different in the following thirteen courses.

courses specific to the English track

  • Skills development
  • Content-based language development
  • Advanced academic skills
  • Medieval and Renaissance English literature (an additional seminar/practical course to complement the obligatory lecture course)
  • English literature from the Restoration until 1890 (an additional seminar/practical course to complement the obligatory lecture course)
  • English literature from 1890 until the 1960s (an additional seminar/practical course to complement the obligatory lecture course)
  • Reading literary texts 1
  • Reading literary texts 2
  • Cultural studies
  • Advanced phonology
  • Advanced syntax
  • Applied linguistics (lecture)
  • Applied linguistics (seminar/practical course)

further consequences

If you select the American track, you will be expected to select some topic related to American studies for your thesis (your supervisor may come from other departments). Your final examination will be before an American studies committee.
