general information on specialization modules
The coordinators and the modules hosted and staffed by SEAS are:
- specialization coordinator: Tartsay NĂ©meth NĂłra
Part of your 180 credit BA programme in English and American Studies must be completed as a 50 credit module in either one of the minor studies or a specialisation module given by SEAS. These modules have been devised for those with a keen interest in a special area of expertise connected to their English/American studies. These modules are thus a viable alternative to a minor, chosen especially by those who do not plan to obtain teacher qualifications on MA level.
This is an either/or choice: you can either take a minor outside SEAS or a specialisation module in SEAS. As students majoring in English, you cannot take English as a minor.
Your choice of specialisation is independent of the choice of English vs. American track you have to make in the first semester.
Ideally you should begin to collect your credits in the minor of your choice in the first semester. If you decide to specialise in a field of your major instead, it is recommended you start collecting your credits in one of the specialisation modules in the third semester.
Bear in mind the following restrictions:
- not every specialisation is offered every year
- a specialisation module is usually taken in the 3rd semester of your studies (the application procedure must be finalised in the 2nd semester) and usually lasts for 4 semesters
- only one specialisation module can be completed by any one student
- the modules (with the exception of the pick-and-choose module) must also be registered in Neptun (for this you will get bonus points in the preregistration period)
- your 50-credit module is only valid if you have collected all of the 50 credits in such a way that all of the required courses and (any number of) elective courses have been fully completed in the particular module you have chosen (check the curriculum (tanegységlista) of the various modules.
- you cannot cross-combine the courses of one module with any other module (if you specialize in English in Business, for example, you cannot âpatch upâ the incomplete module by picking an available course from English in the Media)
- similarly, you cannot combine your incomplete minor with a course from a specialisation module
- a course only counts as valid in a given module if completed with the module specific code (e.g., BBN-ANB for English in Business, BBN-ANM for English in the Media, etc.). In case you think a modular course is run in the given semester but has not been advertised with the module specific code that you need feel free to talk to the coordinator of the module. If you think a specialisation course should be run in a given semester but it is not, talk to your coordinator.
- to start a specialization, contact the coordinator. As place is limited in any one specialization, you will have to apply for a qualifying interview (or meet any other module specific requirement(s)) to enroll.
- you can apply for multiple specializations but you can start and complete one specialization only (in case you have applied for multiple modules the coordinators will decide which one you have successfully qualified for; their decision is final)
- the specialization modules are reserved for those who have seriously made up their minds about completing a whole module and will be given preferential treatment when they pre-register for their modular courses in Neptun
- if you decide to drop a module and complete a minor instead all of the modular courses will be added to your free electives
- qualifying interviews are always conducted in a spring semester (May/June), so if you feel the time is right to approach your coordinator for advice or help please do so (there is no qualifying procedure for the pick-and-choose module)
- the specialisation module/minor will have to be officially taken in Neptun as well (you will receive a message about this in due time)
The only module for which no application is required is the pick-and-choose module (the 300-level specialisation module with the BBN-ANG/AME-3xx codes). This module offers a wide selection of subjects from all fields of research at SEAS (literature, theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, cultural studies, etc.). The courses in this module can be chosen in any order and any combination and thus remain the most flexible alternative to a minor and other modular courses. It too offers a chance of collecting the 50 specialisation credits you need, there is no application procedure, any number of students can be served, you do not have to notify anyone about your choice (just start collecting your credits as soon as you can).
