The Even Yearbook 5 (2002)

The Even Yearbook 5 (2002) is the 5th in the series of biennial volumes that we have published every even-numbered year since 1994. It contains papers by both staff and doctoral students at the Department of English Linguistics of Eötvös Loránd University.
Four of the papers are devoted to phonology. Katalin Balogné Bérces (PhD~student) writes on word-initial consonant lenition in a revised version of Strict CV Phonology, Zoltán Kiss (temporary lecturer) analyses nasal–continuant clusters within the CV model, Attila Starčević (assistant lecturer/PhD student) offers some solutions to the representational problems of yod dropping in English and Croatian, Péter Szigetvári (senior lecturer) examines syncope in English. Two papers are concerned with language history: Tamás Eitler (PhD~student) deals with an Old Norse–Old English contact phenomenon, Judit Górász (PhD~student) looks at the adverbial position in Old English. There are two papers on theoretical syntax: Lajos Marosán (senior lecturer) gives a critical evaluation of Brøndal’s theory of the proper noun, while Mark Newson (associate professor) deals with coordination across languages in a restrictive version of OT. One paper belongs to cognitive linguistics: Réka Benczes (PhD~student) argues that there is a connection between the literal meaning of the constituents of an idiom and the overall figurative meaning.
